Best Fighter of All Time

I just created a poll on my blog, check it out at the bottom of the information that shows up on the right hand side of the page.

The question is "Who is the best fighter of all time?"

I made my vote for BJ Penn.  It was a hard choice between him and Anderson Silva, and I admit that my choice rests partly on BJ having a more engaging personality than Anderson.  If the two ever fought, BJ would need to get it to the ground quick.  His boxing is great, but Silva is a striking god.  If BJ could get it down, I don't think Silva could out-technique him (despite Silva's BJJ black belt)

What about you, who would you choose?  Stop by and vote now!

Year in Pictures

The Big Picture is posting the year in pics, worth a LOOK.

Why you should avoid street fights

It wouldn't let me embed it, but take a minute and go HERE to watch a short video of a Middle School fight.

Notice what happens to homie after he gets the mount and starts wailing away...
He loses situational awareness
BAM!

On the street, people have friends.
On the street, no ref is stopping the fight because your orbital is broke.
On the street, the ground game should consist of knocking the other guy down and getting the hell out of there.
On the street, you are best served by avoiding a fight if at all possible.

FightMetric on Penn/ Sanchez

Awesome webpage

For all of you out there that believe Diego Sanchez won that fight against BJ Penn last night (Cecil Peoples), theFightmetric numbers are in.

Diego attempted 108 strikes, he just landed 8 of those.

As far as take-downs, Diego attempted 27 and completed zero.

There's always room for error so let's say 100 of the strikes landed were just optical illusions, Penn would have still landed 500% more strikes that Diego

Booty

This is why I am not ever going to prison.  Turn up the sound and be disturbed.

San-Do

I am intrigued.  It certainly creates a more hectic (thus street realistic environment).  It really reduces the sport/ stalking aspect of MMA in favor of some serious situational awareness.

No ground game until one of the three is eliminated, then it turns into a traditional MMA match.

Whada ya think?

Me at Blauer Training in 2003

Told Ya...I wasn't always a chubby family man.

Those were good times.  The training inside the school bus for our Confined Space Combatatives class was excellent.

More Blauer films

I can't say enough about the training that this man gives on real life self defense.  His scenario based drills in High Gear are amazing.

JiuJitsu - 1945

From the James Cagney movie "Blood on the Sun"

Real cheesy stand-up but holy shit to the WW2 era grappling throwback.

Orthodox Stance

I just finished watching the documentary "Orthodox Stance."  It was an awesome film exploring the Orthodox Jew and professional boxer Dimitriy Salita.  I am no big boxing fan, but this was such a wonderful story of a pure hearted fighter trying to be himself in a rough/ tough world of pro sports.

I suggest you rent it or Netflix it immediately.  HERE is the official webpage.

I really loved the end, the Hasidic reggae artist Matisyahu sings him into the ring for one of his fights.  Check out that clip HERE.

This movie is a must see for combat sport fans who see fighting as the art of warrior-poets and not drunk rednecks.

Strikeforce outcome...

Disappointing is the word that comes to mind.  I wasn't impressed with the fights that I saw on Saturday.

My predictions were decent I guess.  I scored 75% on foretelling who would win, even if my method/round predictions were less than stellar.

I had Werdum by TKO in the 1st.  It actually became Werdum by decision...and I will add that I felt it was a bad decision.  Bigfoot won that fight.

I had Mousasi by sub in the 1st.  Truth told, he won my TKO in the 2nd, a premature stoppage I thought.

I had Mayhem by decision.  The outcome was Shields by decision.  Even though I failed to get the winner correct, I had predicted the general equality of these two fighters in their skill level - it was either mans game.

I expected Fedor to be smart, stay outside, clinch, trip, armbar in the 1st...instead, Fedor got sorta punked.  I guess thats the reason you stay humbke and don't let the press make you out to be "tha man."  You might not be topdog after all.  Yeah, Fedor got a TKO in the 2nd and thats all some people need - but it should have been a more dominant performance.  The Fedor haters might be right, the days of the Last Emperor are drawing to a close.  Time will tell.  I'll be watching.

StrikeForce Predictions

The big CBS broadcast is just a few days away and I want to go ahead and give my predictions.  If you follow my past fortune-telling for UFC events, you will know that I am usually pretty right-on overall.  I hope that I will continue that streak with these choices:

FEDOR "THE LAST EMPEROR" EMELIANENKO (30-1) VS BRETT "THE GRIM" ROGERS (10-0)
Fedor will use his experience to stay outside of the big mans looping power and take the fight to the ground.  Fedor wins by armbar in the 1st.

JASON "MAYHEM" MILLER (29-6) VS JAKE SHIELDS (28-4) - FOR THE SF MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Both these guys are well-rounded fighters.  Mayhem is more unorthodox and Shields more technical, but it should be a good fight.  Split decision for Mayhem.

GEGARD "THE DREAMCATCHER" MOUSASI (29-2) VS RAMEAU THIERRY "THE AFRICAN ASSASIN" SOKODJO
Mousasi by submission in the 1st.

FABRICIO "VAI CAVALO" WERDUM (12-4-1) VS ANTONIO "BIGFOOT" SILVA (13-1)
Werdum by TKO in the 1st.

Congrats to KhunJo

Big congrats to my former Muay Thai coach Khun Joe Merit. I trained under Joe at Genesis MMA here in McDonough in 2008. He is a great guy. He came back to the ring on Oct 30th aganist one of Wanderlei Silva's students, Massimo Capussela.

The fight was part of the Wild Bills Full Throtle series. I am told that both fighters circled each other and traded combinations back and forth. Both guys got in their share of tough shots but it wasn't long before a whammer was delivered by Joe. The hit put Massimo down on his back before Merit moved in for the finishing blows.

Merit wins by TKO @ 3:20 of R1

I wish I could have been there.  You can see photos of the event HERE.  Full report at Georgia Fighter.

Seagal: Lawman

http://www.aetv.com/steven-seagal-lawman/?vid=AETV_Marketing_facebook_seagal

I'll actually watch this.  I think Aikido is pretty homo, but he is more correctly a master of Aiki-Jitsu (the forerunner of Aikido)

Aiki-Jitsu was a much harsher and more violent, bone-breaking version of the modern Aikido.  Maybe this TV show will feature Seagal using his moves on someone!

UFC 104 - How'd I do?

So the results are in and I have watched the fights via bootleg internet videos...

I called Machida and Shogun exact - unanimous decision. I know that many folks are upset at the outcome, I understand that in close fights you typically gibe the champion the benefit of the doubt.

I was correct in selecting Cain over Ben and I was correct in predicting a TKO. My flaw was that I picked the 1st and it went into the 2nd.

I was also accurate in picking Tibeau over Neer. I was wrong in thinking it would end in submission, it went all the way.

My big disappointment was that I hoped KingFish would hurt Big Daddy. It turned out to be the opposite :(

Overall, not too bad IMO. I guess that being a MMA nerd since 1992 has paid off.

It was pretty good. The look reminded me of Lord of the Rings (Helms Deep particularly), the action was classic vamp v. werewolf, the storyline fit nicely with UW mythology, and the new girl was almost a cool as Kate Beckinsale.

Recently Shane Carwin (fighting Lesnar at UFC 106) said this about his future opponent and former WWE superstar:

“I feel like I have paid my dues and so have a lot of fighters waiting for their shot. Brock is what they call a ‘Draw,’ he sells tickets, I am what they call a ‘Fighter,’ I fight who I am told to fight the way my coaches train me too. We are different people and we treat people different. To me this sport is as much about respect and honor as it is paychecks sound bites.”

I like Carwin. Hes undefeated, a solid striker, and a Div II wrestling champ. I think he has some real skill. He is also the same size as Brock. The question will be if he can overcome the mystique that Brock holds and get his mind ready for a fight of such magnitude.

Kimbo and the Cave

1 - Kimbo lost to Big Country on TUF this past week. Roy executed a good gameplan (once you get hit hard once, go to the ground asap) and it worked. It was an unexciting fight to me however. Kimbo showed some much improved movement and some crisp striking...unfortunately his ground game is super weak (when he side mounts you, turn in to him, make space!) It will take awhile for his ground ability to improve, but I can honestly say that I look forward to seeing a well-rounded MMA fighter name Kimbo in the future.

2 - I went spelunking today (caving) with my buddy Derek. It was fun. The water and slog (cave mud) levels were high. The waterfall was flowing good. We saw a sleeping bat. We saw a swimming salamander. We found some throwup from a past caver with the flu? We found the real pancake squeeze and we found out that I am too wide to get thru it. I experienced dread when I got stuck and then when I got disorientated. It was fun. Enjoy these pics.

Rampage quits MMA!

If the UFC falls apart and MMA loses the momentum it has been gaining, the blame won't fall to boxers big mouths, congressional inquiries, rampant steroid use, grassroot hippie movements, or the proliferation of other promoters (M-1, Strikeforce, etc...)

The blame will fall squarely on Dana White. Everey month there is more info surfacing about the former amatuer boxer turned UFC president who can't say two sentences without dropping a "f-bomb." It is clear to me that he does not care about fighters (or fans)...he is entirely motivated by greed, power, and pride.

A haughty spirit goeth before a fall.

Read the recent blog post of Quinton Rampage Jackson. Jackson is no saint, but I believe what he says here and I am saddened by the reality of my favorite sport following the path of boxing promotions with a WWE mentality. Fighters are people with families. They deserve better for as much as they give of themselves.

"The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them. The UFC bought WFA to get my contract & they saved my life, so I felt loyal to them. They pushed me into a fight with Chuck Liddel even when I clearly stated I wasn't ready to fight for the belt because the American fans didn't know me but I took the fight and didn't complain & after I won the American fans booed me for the first time which changed the way I saw them & it hurt me deeply.

Then before I can even get out of the cage they announced that I was fighting Dan Henderson without even asking me. After I beat Dan Henderson, I made history in becoming the first undisputed champion in MMA but was never even given the pride belt in the cage & I was never promoted as the undisputed champ. Later Anderson Silva was.

Then they had me coach TUF season 7 and fight Forrest and the fight was very controversial & normally when a fight is that close & controversial there is normally an instant replay. I can name a couple of instances. Instead they offered me the Vanderlei Silva fight which I gladly accepted even though I know it was a very risky fight for me to take because of all the drama that was happening to me at the time. I fought that fight with a jaw injury and then a couple weeks later Dana called me and asked me to fight Rashad. For the first time I said no, I didn't want to fight because it was such short notice & I wouldn't have had a long break between camp. Dana talked me into fighting Rashad anyway but Rashad refused the fight and so I had to fight Jardine as a favor to the UFC instead of getting my belt back (which wasn't even worth it to me financially).

Then I reinjured my jaw in the fight with Vanderlei & Jardine. Frank Mir gets hurt so they wanted to switch my fight from UFC 100 to the fight Frank couldn't make it to but I couldn't fight cause I needed jaw surgury. So they give Machida the fight against Rashad & they told me they want me to coach TUF season 10 against Rashad. That's why I wanted Rashad to win so bad but when Rashad got knocked out I told them I wanted to fight Machida for the belt but Dana told me if I coach TUF against Rashad that I could fight Machida afterwards cause this was a different type of ultimate fighter show they were doing. After I signed the contract Dana then changes his mind & says I have to fight Rashad & even told me what to say in the press & so my fans think I was scared to fight Machida. After all that I still never complained & I did it all.

Then this movie role came about that I have been trying to get for over a year & as soon as I found out I was close to getting it, I called Dana right away & asked to push the Memphis fight back just a month or so. I told him what this movie role meant to me. I told him that I used to bond with my father watching the tv show as a kid when my parents where still married & it represents the memories I had with my father when we lived together. My dad became an alcohalic & addicted to drugs & we grew apart. But after my dad got his life back together, I was so proud of my dad & I told him I would always take care of him in the future & make him proud of me. My dad & I are still very big fans of the show & I am basically doing this for the childhood memories I had spending time in front of the tv with my dad. Dana went on the internet & mocked me because of that & I still did nothing. Dana & I finally talked & we made up & then after that he went back on the internet & said some bullshit & he was talking bad about the movie when information is not even supposed to be released & talking about payments which is not even true could really hurt my future acting career, which could very well last longer than my fighting career. I'm not like Randy Couture. My body has been getting so many different injuries that I wont be able to fight until my forties & neither do I want to fight that long. So I feel like my second career could be in jeopardy.. so I'm done fighting. I've been getting negative reviews from the dumb ass fans that don't pay my bills or put my kids though college. So I'm hanging it up. I'm gonna miss all my loyal fans but hopefully they'll follow me to my new career & I will gain more loyal fans along the way. & all you hater fans out there can kiss my big black hairy ass! & anybody that don't like what I just said can come try to kick my ass!

I still feel the UFC is a great organization and I felt like I was very loyal to them but they didn't respect my loyalty but I wish the UFC the best. I did a lot of things for them. I wish no bad blood between us but I have kids & a family back in Memphis to provide for & thats all that matters to me!"

2 pounds too much!

Pretty Boy Floyd has been talking a lot of $hit recently about MMA. He went so far as to say that he had 8 year olds in his gym that hit harder than Rich Franklin.

I figured that he was simply trying to hype up his fight this past Saturday (the one that aired at the same time as UFC 103) so he could get more PPV buys.

However, the amusing thing turns out to be...

A boxer who forced his opponent to fight up 14 lbs (Marquez is usually 130) and who claims to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world...our boy Floyd Mayweather...failed to even make weight.

Thats right. The fight was scheduled for 144lbs. Marquez weighed in at 142lbs and PBF weighed in at 146lbs.

What a douchebag. At least Franklin and Belfort made weight!

Then, Mayweather couldn't even finish his much naturally smaller opponent. It went to a decision. Belfort didn't have that problem.

Boxing will die, MMA will dominate...why? Because MMA is more fast-paced, more exciting, more physical, and MMA yields way better KOs. Sure, MMA stars don't have boxers hands...but I bet they have better hands than any boxers ground game.

Boxing fans (and fighters) should enioy their sport in the short time it has left and keep their mouth shut about MMA...or they can step in the octagon.

I would pay to see Jens Pulver swap a few blows with PBF and then take Mayweather to the ground and pound the crap out of him...might keep that mouth shut next time.

Vitor v. Da Spider?

This kind of stuff is what has begun to really annoy me about the UFC.

Dana says that he feels Vitor is ready for a shot at Anderson Silva. What??? Vitor just came back to the UFC and his win over Franklin wasn't THAT impressive.

The UFC is too eager to give people title shots without putting them thru a ringer...all based on a name or a past history. Its exactly what they did with Lesnar. He got a shot at Randy too early...yeah, I know he won and all - but its the principle. You should have to fight no less than 5 matches in the octagon before a title shot and fights from 10 years ago (or WWE rings) shouldn't count.

UFC 103 results

How did I do...?

I called the main event spot on (Belfort in the 1st)

I correctly picked Dos Santos (I said 2nd, it was the 3rd)

I was wrong on Daley and Kampmann :(

I did pick Koscheck over Trigg (I said it would go the distance, Josh was too fierce to make that come true)

I was wrong on Franca and Griffin :(

ALL IN ALL...3 of 5 correct calls/ one call spot one completely (and it was the main event)

Thats pretty decent for MMA, a sport that is hard to predict due to the potential of every punch to be a fightender!

...maybe I should bet on this stuff?

UFC 103

My predictions for the upcoming fights

Belfort def Franklin TKO in the 1st
"I think Vitor needs this comeback and he has had plenty of time to mourn his sister. If he comes out emotionally 100%, Franklin is dead"

Dos Santos def. CroCop TKO in the 2nd
"Dos Santos trains with Nogueria and Silva, he is a Brazillian kickboxing champ. CropCop has experience, but he is past his prime and he has not faired all that well in the octagon. They will bang for awhile, but Dos Santos will land a clean stunner by the 2nd"

Kampmann def. Daley split decision
"Knapmann had a bare decision win aganist Condit, but Condit is pretty tough. Daley is stepping in for Swick last minute, but I hope to see a battle between these guys."

Koshcheck def Trigg unamious decision
"Trigg is too washed up to beat Josh. But, he is still experienced enough to keep from getting submitted or KO'd by a B- level fighter. It will go the distance and Trigg will go back to making MMA FUBU clothes"

Franca def. Griffin split decision
"I think that Franca is the better fighter, but Griffin is no slouch. I expect it to go the full distance - look for lots of action from these little guys!"
