Marines Outshoot the US Army

The Department of Defense recently conducted a capabilities-based assessment (CBA) to establish the combat effectiveness requirements for rifle marksmanship. The standards for target engagement were defined in terms of “probability of incapacitation given a shot,” “range,” and “time.”

Given that the specified target surface areas on the Marine Corps course are considerably smaller, hits recorded by Marine recruits should represent incapacitating hits. For the task “Engage Threat Personnel With Small Arms Fire, From 201 to 500m [Meters],” the requirement established was greater than or equal to 50 percent probability of incapacitation per shot. Marine recruits achieved 62.86 percent incapacitating hits from 200 to 500 yards, all unsupported and with iron sights.

The CBA further determined that “[U.S. Army soldiers] lack the ability to achieve desired accuracy and incapacitating effects against personnel targets at ranges from 0 to 500m.” Based on postcombat surveys, 10 percent of the cumulative distribution of personnel targets engaged across all types of terrain are at ranges of 400m or greater. In Afghanistan there have been units that have completed very kinetic deployments whose direct fire engagements were all at distances of 500m or greater.

The Marine Corps is the only Service that conducts marksmanship training beyond 300m for all personnel.

Resume

At a recent career fair I was handed many resumes by prospective Atlanta area students.  The one that most stood out to me had the following paragraph (word for word) under the top section - titles "Qualities"...

"I am a loyal and dedicated individual who has a great deal of ambition.  Although I have an extensive experience in the fast food industry, however I love o learn new things and is always up for a new challenge.  I am a freiendly individual who gets along well with others, however I can still work well on my own.  I am seeking a position that I can develop and excel at my job."

Holy American public school system Batman!  You might ask, how does a person with such a horrific understanding of the English language come to be a student at a major Georgia University?  In fact, how can an individual who fails to proofread their work, even something as vital as their resume, come to have a 3.5 GPA at said school?

Then I saw it, on the second page of the resume...under achievement - "Captain of Basketball Team."

How sad.

The recap is found here:
http://spoilerslost.blogspot.com/2010/05/major-spoilers-episode-616-what-they.html#axzz0nuUyTYqZ

After reading it some things appear clear...

- Richard appears to die at the hands of Smokie- mayeb he is still alive though?

- Widmore works for Jacob.  Jacob told him to bring Desmond back.

- Zoe dies at Flocke's hand

- Widmore dies at Ben's hand

- Ben is back in the Flocke camp

- Smokie IS Jacob's brother

- "They" all died to protect the island

- Kate is still a candidate.  Her name was crossed out when she became a mom to Aaron, but now she is back in the running.

-  When Jacob asks for a volunteer to take his place, Jacks steps up and drinks the candidate kool-aid

-  ALT Locke come to Jack and says its fate - he should have the surgery

-  Flocke and Ben reach the well, Desmond is missing.  Ben asks about Desmond.  Flocke says that Widmore told him that Desmond is Jacob's "failsafe" - if the candidates refused to be the new guardian, Desmond could destroy the island.  Locke decides to use Desmond to do just that.

This all seems to jive with those finale script pages that got leaked and the call sheet that was left lying around.

How a title fight should be...

Anderson Silva should learn a lesson from Machida/ Shogun 2.  Those guys delivered a great fight even if it only lasted one round.

Both men had obviously learned from their mistakes in their original confrontation.  I loved watching Shogun use his MMA Muay Thai aganist Machida - hopping front leg and all.  I also loved watching Machida check a low kick and follow-up with a karate kick of his own.

The knee that Lyoto delivered to Shogun's torso just before Shogun clipped him was brutal.

Warriors doing it how it should be done.

Efficiency

I work for the federal government.

Today, we had a call from one of our satellite employees.  It seems that when we shipped her a laptop last week we forgot to include the power cord (stuff happens right?)

My boss asked me to grab her power cord and ship it down to her via UPS Next Day Air so that she could keep her project moving.  I arranged the shipment as directed.

Shipping a Dell laptop power cord overnight to FL via UPS costs the taxpayer $46.22.

According to my 30 seconds of web research - buying a new one at a local Best Buy or on-line would have cost as low as $25.88.

?-?-?

Oh - did I mention that we had a big meeting this morning about the new theme for our agency for the remainder of FY 2010...

...cost efficiency

Can't wait for healthcare reforms to kick in!

Dear Abu Dhabi - I am sorry...

Wow. The 3 main fights at UFC 112 were less than stellar and the aftermath was even worse.

Anderson Silva showed us once again that he is either HOT or COLD. I guess he took the words of Jesus in Revelation pretty serious. He is never lukewarm.

The Spider seemed to check out after 3 rounds on Saturday night. I don't know where his fighting spirit goes sometimes.

If you get a chance take a look at the very end of the fight again. The ref holds up Anderson's hand for .5 seconds and then walks away in disgust. meanwhile, Dana is nowhere to be seen for the belt presentation.

Legions of fans around the world were excited to see AS lay a beatdown on Maia and all we got was Silva landing a victory blow aganist himself.

Dana went crazy after the fight, talking trash about how Silva will be the first champ to fight on a prelim cards, etc...Not DW's best moment, but the man really doesn't have any sense of restraint anyway.

As for BJ and Frankie Edgar. I agree with the upset fans that BJ should have won the fight. Frankie was fast, but thats about it.

Lesson for BJ - don't let it go to the judges.

And then there was the Seniors Division match-up. Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie.

In MMA today, strong wrestlers with decent submission skills and ground and pound beat up old school BJJ masters. This is not the early 1990s.

I wish that the Gracies would drop the hype they are always trying to create for themselves. They are legends in the sport because the brought awareness to the ground-game and they pioneered the UFC in America. Thats enough to be proud of.

Boasting about your unbeaten family and how you are the toughest MFers in the world is looking silly these days as you lose fight after fight. Hughes/ Gracie never should have happened.

Lets all hope that UFC in the next few months looks better than last night.

Withstand the Storm...

Slow and Steady wins the Muay Thai fight.

UFC 111 Results

So I called Carwin v. Mir exact.  I can see Carwin and Lesnar being the cause of a tsunami soon.  I think Shane will emerge victorious!

GSP v Hardy was disappointing.  GSP used his superior wrestling to keep Hardy on the ground - a tactic that was necessary to maintain the belt and very expected...Unfortuantely, GSP wasn't able to demonstrate any real BJJ skill.

Both the armbar and the kimura that GSP attempted seemed to be lacking in technical skill.  It looked like GSPS was trying to muscle Hardy into submission.  I am sure that GSP knows the correct technique for both of those moves - I think that he sucumbed to emotion as he tried to finish Dan off.

I feel that GSP was so scared of a Serra repeat and of losing his belt that he tried to play it safe with a lay and pray groundgame that culminated in two sub-par submission attempts done within a frenzied mindset of fear that he might lose to a kid with a mowhawk.

GSP kept his belt at the end of the night but he may have lost some fans.  To me, a real victory for GSP, one where he could have come out with his head held high, would have happened IF he had decided to stand and bang - regardless of who left with the belt.

Some champs get "keep the belt" syndrome...Anderson did for awhile.  Some guys see the belt as secondary to an intangible glory - testing oneself aganist the best that another man has to offer.  BJ Penn and Fedor come to mind.

I hope that the next time we see GSP he will have learned a strong lesson from this lackluster performance about what make a champion a champion - and it isn't a title belt.

UFC 111 Predictions

So the next UFC is only a few days away.  As many of you know I don't even have basic cable so watching it via PPV will not happen.  Nevertheless, I follow these things pretty close on the internet and I wanted to make some quick predictions and comments about the event.  I will post a follow-up blog next week discussing where my predictions hit and where they missed.

Frank Mir v. Shane Carwin
for the Interim Heavyweight Belt

Shane is just about the size of Brock and he is a much better striker.  He was the NCAA II Wrestling Champ in 1999 and he has a purple belt in BJJ.  If Frank had real trouble with Brock in their last fight - I am unsure how Mr. Mir will get past Shane Carwin.

The only thing that Mir has going for him IMO is his experience.  He has been in the cage aganist much better opponents thru his career and that could factor into the equation.  I have been happy to see that both men seem to have respect for the other in this match-up.  That WWE stuff makes me nauseous.

Since Carwin is undefeated and has never gone to either the 2nd round or to decision...

I predict Carwin by ref stoppage due to strikes in the 1st.

GSP v. Dan Hardy
for the Middleweight Belt

When I first heard about this fight I thought "another win for GSP."  To be honest as of now - I ain't so sure.

GSP is good...more than that - he is one of the best pound for pound in MMA.  Dan Hardy is a punk looking, trash talking kid from the UK.  But, lets think about a few things...

1)  GSP has been the champ for a couple of years...is the fire diminishing.  Hardy is probably more hungry for the win that GSP and that can mean alot.

2)  Hardy is a better striker I think and we know that GSP can be put on his rear with a good bomb (see Matt Serra).

3)  GSP is an amazing wrestler but Hardy no slouch, he is a BJJ brown belt under Eddie Bravo.

I think that GSP will have to try and avoid standing with Hardy to win - I am rooting for the underdog on this one...

I predict Hardy by KO in the 2nd.

Anniversary of Mask's death

On 11 March 2009, after midnight, Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis was heading home from the gym when his Ferrari was struck by a drunk driver, sending it into a fatal spin.

Mask began with an idea, a car full of t-shirts, and the greatest friend and partner conceivable, Dan ‘Punkass’ Caldwell. Mask slept on couches and lived on hope, and when he made a little money, he sponsored fighters, with every dollar.

Mixed Martial Arts too was once as young, iMask’s words:

“There was nothing that you could put on in that day that meant what we were feeling like. Mixed Martial Arts and fighting didn’t have any identity. You couldn’t put on a uniform and feel the way we felt in the gym. So, just as a need to identify what I was feeling on the inside of myself, so I came up with a T-shirt.”

In 1999 the business grossed $29,000. By 2008, shirts could be purchased in over 20,000 retail stores worldwide, and Tapout grossed a staggering $100,000,000.

Mask is dead and will be mourned forever and ever.

But when you love this sport, you honor Mask. You honor Mask when you train your heart out in the gym, and you understand better than any scholar what Shakespeare meant when he wrote “For he today that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother.”

When this sport fills you with a feeling like no other, you may not have a word for it, but there is one – TapouT.
Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis 1964-2009
May you rest the way you lived, Inyaface

Personal note:

When I was getting ready to compete in my first grappling competition I ordered a Tapout tee shirt to wear the day of.  That shirt arrived promptly in the mail and I wrote the folks at Tapout to say thanks and tell them why I had ordered it.  I expected either no reply or a generic one at best.  I'll never forget what I actually got back in my email inbox...

"Gut those muthafuckers! - Mask"

It was crude, but it was personal and motivating.  I took third in my weight class at that tournament.

James Toney signs with the UFC

Bad move Dana...

“Lights Out” is a former professional middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight boxing champion, while currently being listed as the active NABO and IBA heavyweight title holder.

Toney’s decorated professional boxing record currently stands at 72 victories and only 6 defeats, with 3 draws and 2 no-contests. James has stopped 44 of his 72 victims via knockout for an impressive 61% knockout ratio.

He is also the worst possible style of boxer to sign in the UFC.  Heavy hands with little movement...he will get taken down quick and submitted (by someone like Mir) or he'll be ground and pounded (by Lesnar or Couture) or he'll get destroyed on his feet with Thai kicks (maybe Vera)...

This is just as stupid as the Kimbo thing.  Worst of all, Toney hasn't even had to compete in one single MMA match and he just got a UFC contract.  Bulls__t!

Maybe Dana is trying to either:

a)  Snub the boxing world by signing one of their big boys and then having him destroyed in the Octagon

or

b)  Trying to recruit the last few boxing fans who don't already like MMA to the sport

Who knows what goes on in DW's mind.  It certainly isn't the purity and honor of the sport.  I think his head is filled with these:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$......

Found!

I love the TV show LOST.  Its the onlt show that I actually watch on any kind of a regular basis.  This is the 6th and last season (insert sobbing)...and I think I have found some people who know how the story ends.  I should first credit my wife.  During this seasons premiere episode she told me the same thing that I later read in theories by serious LOST bloggers.  I didn't believe her then, now I have faith.

I am reposting this info from Dark UFO, google it.

Jack has something important to do by LostnNC
Posted by DarkUFO at 2/24/2010 04:30:00 AM View Comments

I've posted a couple of theories on her that propose that the island being underwater is not the result of Jughead, that we will see how the island is submerged later this season, and that the off-island flashes we are seeing are actually the show's epilogue. (Beware possible spoilers!)

http://theoriesonlost.blogspot.com/2010/02/how-lost-ends-expanded-theory-by.html
http://theoriesonlost.blogspot.com/2010/02/faraday-and-why-jughead-didnt-sink.html
http://theoriesonlost.blogspot.com/2010/02/what-does-kate-do-by-lostnnc.html
http://theoriesonlost.blogspot.com/2010/02/mystery-solved-jughead-didnt-sink.html

It's a lot of reading, so sorry about that. For a quick recap, her goes:

1) Jughead did not create the "alternate" off-island timeline.

2) We have not seen yet why the island is underwater but we will later this season (I am guessing that it is "moved" there).

3) Because the island actually "sank" prior to 1973 in the "alt", we will see Ben Linus off-island and he will be a fine up-standing citizen.

4) The "alt" is the end of Lost, everything else is just progress to get us to that point.

5) Faraday still has a role to play in reconciling the 2 versions of reality we are seeing.

6) In the alt, we will start to see each of the characters find "resolution" to their stories.

To add to this theory I want to discuss #s 2 and 6.

As for #6, Jack is a dad now. While his relationship has been strained, by the end of the episode he has found resolution not only with himself and the relationship he once had with his dad, but also with his son. We also saw that Dogan has a good life off the island and also has a family. So far this season, everyone we have seen has so far has had a better life than the one they had on the island.

As for #2, I have theorized that Jack is going to move the island, not only to a place in the past but also to the ocean floor. This will cause a true reset by removing the island from the equation and resulting in the ALT timeline we are seeing. Tonight we got a better idea of why Jack would want to move it that far into the past rather than just to sometime randomly prior to 2004. Jack now knows that he has been watched since he was a child. To remove the influence of the island from his life, he is going to have to move it to a period in time prior to his own childhood.

When Hugo asked Jacob why didn't he just tell him what was going on Jacob said Jack needed to see it himself because "He has something important to do."

Why Anderson is so good.

So I'm watching this 10 minute clip of Anderson Silva sparring (boxing style) at Freddie Roach's club.  It suddenly hits me...he is so good for three reasons -

1)  He is incredibly agile.  He makes me think of that old saying by Ali "float like a butterfly"
2)  He can see the attack so clearly before it lands and then employ his agility to quite often avoid it
3)  He counterpunches at odd angles, using his fists to come back at you from strange vectors that you don't see

Oh and a 4th reason...

4)  Taking him to the ground is no good, he is a legit BJJ black belt.

Anderson Silva rocks.  Enjoy this clip while I am busy nuthugging.

8 year old kicks my ass...

This kid could:

Military Camo

I have watched the military forces of our nation transition their battle uniform designs over the past 15 years and I have a few opinions (not that anyone cares)...

Everyone in the Army, Marines, Air Force, and some Navy used to wear either this (in the woods):

or this (in the desert/ 6 color - Desert Storm era):

desert (3 color - late 90s)

In the early 2000s the Marines were the first to branch out and adopt new digital cammies.  They kept the 2 styles in play and they started sporting these:

That was a good call.  The new pattern, while ugly in garrison, is very effective in the field.  Its randomness confuses the enemies eyes - kinda like those weird pictures that you put up to your eye and then pull away slowly to see an image.

Shortly thereafter the Army came along and adopted a similar concept.  The torpedoed the dual color scheme approach in favor of a neutral green, gray color.  Seen here:

Again - good idea.  Too much velcro for me, but overall - nicely done.

So now the Air Force wants to get on the band wagon and they decode to go with a throwback to the Vietnam days - yes, Tigerstripe camo.  Its abit hokey to me, but hey, whatever.

Check it out:

Now the Navy, who used to wear either a working blues (dungarees) or a coverall uniform on ship, like this:

Now the Navy has begun wearing this:

Holy Smack!

These new Navy uniforms are so flipping sore to my eyes that I am gonna need some of my grandmas stash to clear up the newly formed glaucoma....

Essentially, the Navy tried to copy the Marines digital pattern.  Except, why do they need to be camouflaged?  Last I checked the Navy didn't go out on the front lines - typically.  And those few naval persons who do (SEALS for example) are probably not gonna be wearing this grey, white, blue, urban camo crap.

It also angers me because this isn't the first Naval theft of US Marine uniforms.  The Navy has recently done it again.  They changed their tradition of 2 service uniforms for those members E-1 to E-6, a summer whites and winter blacks (white seen here)

Now they have one year round service uniform - here

Why does that make me mad you ask?  I mean it is good to consolidate into a year round uniform I think.  However, take a look at the longstanding Marine Service uniform...

Notice anything unusual?  I don't mean how the Marine looks ready to kill and the Navy guy looks ready to sell you a car...

I mean, what's the difference in the two?  The Navy stole our Marine Service uniform and changed the pants color.   Thats BS.  It makes me mad.  Get your own damn uniform.

Lastly, check out the proposed revision of the Air Force dress uniform...

Old one:

The new one:

I guess if you get tired of ripping off the Marines - try ripping off the British Air Force.

Oh wait, who says you ever get tired of ripping off the Marines.  This Air Force idea barely fell short a few years back.  Thank God they didn't go with this one...

Who knows what the next 20 years will bring...

Fondly remembering myself in this style...

I head off to dream of digital camouflage...
